Tasting notes

This Burundi coffee offers juicy cantaloupe, ripe papaya and a lingering caramelised sweetness. This Burundi is bursting with tropical fruit character, balanced by a rich, sweet finish that makes for a seriously delicious cup.

Origin

Our latest Roaster’s Choice comes from Nyabiraba Hill in Burundi. Produced by Migoti, Lot 41 is a naturally processed coffee that beautifully showcases the distinctive character of this East African origin. Carefully sourced through Omwani, it’s an exciting coffee with plenty of personality and a wonderfully vibrant cup.

Variety

This coffee is Pink Bourbon, a variety we love for its vibrant and expressive character. Here, it delivers a wonderfully fruit-forward cup, with our roasting bringing out juicy tropical notes of cantaloupe and papaya alongside a rich caramelised sweetness.

Process

The Natural process has always been the commonly practiced method for producing coffee in the Rwenzoris. A recurring sight as you travel through the mountains is seeing farmers drying their harvests on tarpaulins at the front of their homes.

Locally, this coffee is called DRUGAR (Dried Uganda Arabica), and though Agri Evolve largely buy fresh cherries from the farmers they work with, there is still a demand driven by farmers to produce this traditional natural coffee which is so rooted in the history of the Rwenzoris.

African Moon then, is a coffee grown and processed by the people of the Rwenzori Mountains, the Mountains of the Moon.

“

The coffee is off beautiful quality, all full, whole beans, brilliantly roasted. They taste great as espresso, sublime as flat white or iced latte. Lovely.

After being recommend to try Stewarts coffee roast, I bought the Raisin, Chocolate, Peanut espresso beans. I had regular updates from them while my beans were being roasted, packed and dispatched, with tracking available and the whole ordering process was so easy (just like it should be). On to the beans... Lightly roasted (light brown), not dark and shiny like a lot of dark-roasted beans I've tried before... and the smell when I opened the bag was incredible! Definitely the best-smelling coffee I've had. Taste-wise, I tried my usual 2-shot Americano and was very pleased with the smooth, robust taste. You can actually taste the notes described... but I wasn't "blown away" (although it was definitely up there with the best). Then I tried a quad-espresso. Espresso is what these beans are roasted for. A literal taste explosion, not bitter at all, but a delicious, nutty flavour with an overtone of peanut and chocolate and a back note of raisins. A beautiful hit of coffee on the palate. You've got yourself a subscriber.
